Steel components cannot be manufactured, welded, transported, and erected to mathematically exact dimensions. Steel fabrication tolerances define how much measured geometry may deviate from the specified geometry while remaining acceptable under the governing project requirements.
A tolerance is not a workmanship target. It is also not permission to ignore fit-up problems or modify a member in the field. Fabricators should work toward the specified dimensions, while designers and detailers must provide connections and interfaces capable of accommodating permitted variation.
The applicable limit cannot be determined from one universal tolerance table. It depends on:
- the governing code and referenced standards;
- the type and function of the member;
- the dimension being measured;
- the fabrication and measurement condition;
- the connection and supported construction;
- any project-specific requirements in the contract documents.
For international projects, the first task is therefore to identify the governing system—not to select a convenient numerical limit.
